TWO THOUSAND ACRES OF SKY

Following the successful showing of the second series of this popular BBC drama, viewers now realise that the location for the filming of 'Two Thousand Acres of Sky' was not an island off the coast of Skye. The fictional island of 'Ronansay' is actually the picturesque village of Port Logan, near the Mull of Galloway - Scotland's most southerly point.

The harbour is the focal point of Port Logan, with its small lighthouse and whitewashed cottages, and is just 15 miles south of Stranraer in Dumfries & Galloway - accessible by road and rail, with ferries into Stranraer and Cairnryan from Northern Ireland. The fictional ferry service from 'Ronansay' brings visitors to the 'island' from 'Portree' - in fact, the scenes supposedly from 'Skye' are filmed in Portpatrick, which is just north of Port Logan.

Dumfries & Galloway has captured the heart of Michelle Collins, star of 'Two Thousand Acres of Sky', who says, "Making this series has taken me to the most beautiful places I've ever filmed. I have never seen such skies and such extraordinary countryside."

This love of the area has resulted in Michelle becoming its 'Ambassador' for tourism. In 2001 we were fortunate in having this former Eastenders star open a fete in Port Logan - creating its first ever traffic jam, with an estimated 400 cars arriving at this small harbour. More than 1,000 people were there to welcome Michelle who happily signed autographs and posed for photos with hundreds of those present.

Local people initially watched the series eager to see their own 'stars' - friends and neighbours who had been used as 'extras' - and to catch glimpses of the stunning scenery and local landmarks in the South Rhins of Galloway. Now they watch this gentle drama for its own sake - enjoying the story as it unfolds, following the lives and loves of the inhabitants of a small Scottish island.

Please note a third series will be filmed from July 2002 and there may be restricted access to the village and beach whilst filming is in progress.
